It allows users to transfer callers directly in to a mailbox, have message waiting buttons light up, zero out to the operator (usually, unless denied specifically or programmed not to be able to during off hours), retrieve messages remotely, and more.

Most phone systems today can add voicemail. In fact, although it remains optional, the majority are now bought with it. Some voicemail systems are designed for a specific phone system or several phone systems from one manufacturer.

Not all phone systems can have voicemail. Some are too old and weren't designed with the proper feature sets to integrate with it. Still others can have it, but their integration is lacking and it would be better to consider other alternatives.
